Best Whisky Bars in Hobart: Top Spots for Whisky Lovers

Last Updated: January 27, 2025

Tasmania produces some of the best whiskies in Australia (and some would say, the world!), and a trip to Hobart is a great place to start your whisky adventures due to the substantial number of internationally acclaimed distilleries surrounding it. While we highly recommend a visit to the distilleries, we've cultivated a list of the best places around Hobart to taste an array of whiskies and other spirits (not just Tasmanian, though these bars all carry a wide selection of superb Tasmanian whiskies).

The Still, Lark Whisky Bar

The Still is a beautifully designed modern bar and cocktail lounge with an extensive selection of Tasmanian whiskies (including Lark of course!) available to taste. The Still is one of the best venues in Hobart if you want to try a wide selection of locally produced spirits (see image gallery below to see their whisky wall). There is also a retail section where you can purchase Lark's Forty Spotted gins (also available taste) and Lark's core whisky range.

You can choose a tasting flight from the menu or do what we did and create your own (price will vary depending on your selection). Tastings (from the menu) do not need to be booked in advance, though you can reserve a table, which we recommend for evenings or on weekends.

Evolve Spirits Bar

Evolve Spirits Bar is a stunning whisky and cocktail bar within the MACq 01 Hotel. They were voted Tasmania’s Cocktail Bar of the Year and Australia’s Hotel Bar of the Year in 2021 by the Australian Bar Awards. With its sophisticated atmosphere, The Evolve Spirits Bar is an impressive spot for anyone who loves to enjoy their dram in style, and their extensive list of Tamanian whisky, gin and vodka, mainland Australian whisky, international whisky, and curated selection of old and rare spirits, will delight even the most discerning spirits drinker.

The bar offers a unique experience with luxurious design coupled with quirky decor - a visit to Evolve is worthwhile for more than just whisky - they have an incredible collection of artefacts on display, including a Triceratops nose horn, megaodon teeth, and the skeleton of a giant Russian Cave bear.

The Evolve Spirits bar also hosts a "Drinks with the Distiller Experience," tasting experience three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) where guests can explore Overeem whiskies guided by an Overeem distiller. The Drinks with the Distiller Experience is $45 pp and includes a tutored tasting of three (3) Overeem Core Range whiskies, and one (1) surprise dram direct from Overeem. Bookings are essential - call (03) 6210 7600, or email hello@macq01.com.au. Roddy and I are huge fans of Overeem and would highly recommend a tasting of their whiskies if you're not familiar them already.

The Best Places to Stay in Tasmania For Whisky Fans

The Salamanca Whisky Bar

What caught our eye initially when we approached the Salamanca Whisky Bar, was the sign for $10 cocktails (during happy hour/when it's quiet). At the time of our visit there was also a special for 3 Tassie Whiskies for $45

The Salamanca Whisky Bar has an extensive whisky list and is conveniently located in Battery Point. They offer a small selection of bar snacks and an impressive selection of cakes. The couches are large and comfortable, making it a great spot to enjoy the afternoon (when we visited), or finish your evening.

The Den, Battery Point

If you're at the Salamanca Whisky Bar and looking for some excellent food, cocktails, or beer on tap, then we recommend heading around the corner to the The Den, on Salamanca Place. Their Hoisin Duck Loaded Fries are outstanding, though we thoroughly enjoyed all the food we tried (Chicken Karage, Bibimbap, Gyoza).

Bar Wa Izakaya

Bar Wa Izakaya is a bustling spot where you can enjoy an array of Japanese dishes and choose from a wide selection of Japanese whiskies and beers. For anyone not familiar with Izakayas, they're the Japanese version of Spanish Tapas bars - they serve small plates of food designed to be consumed with booze, and Bar Wa Izakaya does this very well. They took out "Best International or Speciality Cuisine" at the Tasmanian Hospitality Assoc. Awards in 2024.

Bar Wa Izakaya is open 7-days (till late), and food is served all day 12pm till 11pm. Steaming bowls of fresh ramen are available from 12 noon till 3 pm (and until 4.30pm on Sundays) - we highly recommend stopping by for a bowl of ramen as a great way to kick off an afternoon/evening drinking in Hobart!

Bar Wa Izakaya is the perfect venue whether you're drinking/dining solo, or with a group. Their share plate menu features lots of tasty options and makes for a lively and social dining experience. The menu changes daily. Bookings for groups of 3 or more are highly recommended. Walk-ins can usually be managed for 1-2 people, and there's always the lounge upstairs where you can relax with a whisky by the fire.
